Technical Deep Dive 6 - Motion Sensing With MPU6050

Core Question

How does a board know whether it has tilted, turned, or accelerated?

Two Sensor Ideas In One Device

The MPU6050 combines:

  • an accelerometer
  • a gyroscope

These are different sensing concepts.

The accelerometer helps detect acceleration and gravity-relative tilt. The gyroscope helps detect rotation rate. When combined, they provide a richer picture of orientation and motion.

Orientation Is A Computed Description

Values such as:

  • pitch
  • roll
  • yaw

are not little labels stored inside the sensor. They are derived descriptions of how the board is oriented in space.

That means motion sensing involves measurement plus interpretation.

Why Live Visualisation Helps

When the dashboard shows motion values and orientation visuals, it is doing a representation job again. Raw physical motion becomes numbers and graphics that a human can understand.

Why This Matters

This lesson shows that embedded systems can sense not just simple on/off events, but continuous physical behaviour.
